Can you believe that we are halfway through May already!
- May is when we see the Aussie winter citrus season start to kick along. We have had early season mandarins out of Queensland for a few weeks now but the fun really begins when Mildura and Robinvale citrus starts. This week we have started with our first bin of the pink Cara Cara oranges and the delicious Satsuma Mandarins.
- Grapes are still good but we will soon change into late season varieties like Luisco and Cool Grape as we near the end of the season.
- Victorian strawberries are still cropping well due to the mild Autumn weather but these will soon end and we will swap over to Queensland grown strawberries soon.
- May has seen a few lines become very short.
- Tomatoes, beans, capsicums and mushrooms have been very short in supply forcing up the market price. Tomatoes will likely maintain higher than normal market price as the Queensland season has not yet started and Victoria and South Australian growing regions have seen a reduction in crop volumes.
- Blueberries have been very expensive due to short supply but this should change in a few weeks as new areas start picking.
- It is fairly normal for lines like beans and corn to have elevated market price as the Victorian season ends and the Queensland season is slow to start. There maybe a short period where corn is unavailable.
- The brassica lines like cauliflower, broccoli, Silverbeet, and baby broccoli continue to offer great value as do pumpkin varieties and English spinach so make sure they are on your shopping list. Check out our recipe for roast broccoli with lemon, garlic & parmesan recipe and an Asian Style Pumpkin Soup recipe (this one was high on rotation last year).
- We also have some beautiful apples and pears available at the moment and the abundant supply means prices, particularly on our bulk lines are great value.
- Again, we have a delicious Apple Frangipane Tart with Miso Caramel recipe on the website here.
- We are looking forward to seeing the winter citrus season expand to include blood oranges and more mandarin varieties.
- Make sure you take advantage of these beautiful autumn days because winter will soon be upon us.
Fruitfully Yours, Dean
